Did growth hormone add to strength training in the older-men trial?

Both groups in a resistance-training experiment can become stronger.

Keep two comparisons apart. Within each group: Participants gained strength during training; Between groups: Did recombinant GH add to the training response?; Separate endpoint: Body composition and hormone measurements
Shared improvement during a training program cannot identify the contribution of the extra intervention.

Both groups in a resistance-training experiment can become stronger. The scientific question is whether the group assigned an extra intervention improves more than the group receiving the same training and a comparator. A study of recombinant growth hormone in older men illustrates a mistake often made with before-and-after gym stories in Bali.

Look for the shared intervention

In the randomized training study, older men undertook strength training while researchers compared recombinant GH with the control condition. Strength increased in both groups during the program. The investigators did not find that GH augmented the strength response to training. Quoting only the improvement among GH recipients omits the element designed to show what training alone could do under the same study conditions.

Hormone and strength outcomes can diverge

A change in growth-hormone-related markers or body composition is not necessarily an additional increase in lifting performance. The measurements answer different questions and can move in different directions. A person can gain proficiency in a movement, improve coordination or tolerate more training over time. To answer whether the extra intervention contributed to strength, look for the between-group functional result rather than choosing the biomarker with the largest change.

What a before-and-after photograph leaves out

Two photos taken months apart may document a change in appearance, but cannot show which training, sleep, nutrition, familiarization with the task or other factors contributed. A more informative personal training record includes the actual exercise, measuring method and progression over time. Even that record is not a randomized comparison. It helps a coach or clinician understand the person's course without assigning causation from timing alone.

Who does the result describe?

Age, health status, training experience and the research protocol all matter. Older study participants are not interchangeable with a younger person pursuing performance goals or an adult diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency. The specialist guideline for adult growth hormone deficiency addresses a different clinical population. Somatropin's presence in a Bali catalogue cannot bridge that difference. The useful conclusion is narrow and concrete: in this study, the extra intervention did not add to the measured strength response.
